The Cincinnati Local Section of the American Chemical Society

Four awards of $400 each will be funded to allow Cincinnati Section undergraduate students to travel, attend, and present their research at a National ACS meeting.

Application Instructions and Requirements:

1.The monies awarded are only to be used to attend the spring National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.

2. Only undergraduate students may be funded. In order to receive funding the undergraduate student must be the presenting author of a poster or oral presentation.

3. The dead-line for applications for the award is December 31, 2008.

4. The application must contain a copy of the abstract of the presentation; the signature of the student; the signature of the research mentor; and the signature of the chemistry department chair. A letter of recommendation from the research mentor must also accompany the application.

5. No department may submit more than four individual applications.

6. The Educational Grants committee will evaluate the applications and select the award recipients.

7. The students receiving awards will acknowledge the assistance of the Cincinnati Section of the American Chemical Society in their presentation.

Nominations will be accepted for the Cincinnati Section Outstanding Service Award until March 15, 2009. The nominee should have performed an extraordinary service to the Cincinnati Section. The nominator should be a member of the Section. A complete nomination consists of a letter written by the nominator detailing the reasons the nominee is deserving of the award, and at least one supporting letter by another member of the Section, may include nominee’s CV.

Please nominate outstanding area educators for High School Chemistry Teacher of the Year, Middle School/Junior High School Science Teacher of the Year, or Elementary School Science Teacher of the Year. Nominations should include the teacher’s CV and at least one letter of nomination (ideally from the school principal), indicating why the individual exemplifies excellence in Chemistry Education (for High School) or Science for Middle or Elementary School. Due by February 13, 2009.

Recognize your colleagues and co-workers for their outstanding contributions to our field. Please submit a nomination for Cincinnati Chemist of the Year and Research Associate of the Year. The nomination deadline is December 31, 2008, so act fast!

The Chemist of Year, must hold a PhD who is a member of the section. Nomination requires two letters of recommendation and the nominee’s CV.

The Research Associate must be or have been a practitioner within the chemical discipline. Nomination requires a letter of recommendation; CV and additional documentation is optional.

Mickey Sarquis (MU-Middletown) received the Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach from CPRC. “Her passion for outreach provides an outstanding example for members of our profession while providing for education and inspiration of both teachers and students”.

Also at the Philadelphia meeting the 39th Central Regional Meeting (CERMACS 2007) won the Outstanding Regional Meeting Award from the M&E Committee. Congratulations to Joe Caruso and the Committee.  Joe  provided a poster on CERMACS 2007.

The Cincinnati Section was nominated for 2 other ChemLuminary Awards in Outstanding Industrial Involvement (CCA) and Outstanding Teacher Program (CCA).  The Outstanding Teacher Program won. Congratulations to Susan Hershberger and committee. Susan also provided a poster on the Science Café event.

038-web.jpgJohn Janusz presented Ray D’Alonzo with an Outstand Service Award on 14-May. Among his recognized contributions Ray served as Chairman of the Cincinnati Section of the ACS in 1981. He Chaired the Regional meeting in 2000 and was co-Chair in 2007, wherein his fund efforts resulted in net proceeds of over $70,000 for our Section. He led the significant rewrite/modernization of Section by-laws, coordinating the rewrite with ACS National. He also served as President of the Cincinnati Section of the Society of Applied Spectroscopy.

Ray obtained his B.S. degree in Chemistry (cum laude) from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 1974 and his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1977. He is currently Manager, Doctoral Recruiting and University Relations, at Procter & Gamble. He joined P&G’s Food Division after graduate school. He worked in the Bar Soap and Household Cleaning Products Division, and the Pharmaceutical Division where he led the research section that discovered the blockbuster osteoporosis drug, Actonel.

In addition to the above mentioned service to the ACS, Ray has been active in the Annual Greater Cincinnati United Way Campaign, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association, and the Boy Scouts of America. In 1995, Dr. D’Alonzo received the Distinguished Alumni Award for service to UMASS. In 2000 he received the UMASS Chancellor’s Medal – the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual from the University.

Ray will retire from P&G this year. He and wife Marilyn will maintain their primary residence in Blue Ash, OH, but will establish a home in Amherst Massachusetts where Ray will serve as an Adjunct Professor in the University of Massachusetts Chemistry Department. His teaching responsibilities are to begin in fall 2008.
