6th ANNUAL FAMILY AND FRIENDS PICNIC
Sunday September 20, 2009 from 1:00pm – 5:00pm
Activities and entertainment will include food, drinks, music, liquid nitrogen ice cream, chemistry puzzles, chemistry demonstrations and a cornhole competition. Celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of fall by connecting with your old friends and meeting new friends.
Bring your family! Germania Park has a playground for children and playing fields for various sports. Conveniently located just north of Cincinnati, the park has a covered pavilion so it will be fun rain or shine. Bring your friend or cornhole partner! You might win a unique artist designed chemistry-themed cornhole game.

Food/Potluck: The section will provide grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, metts, and chicken as well as condiments and drinks including beer, soft drinks and juice boxes.
Attendees are cordially requested to bring a dish to share. If your last name start name starts with A-M please bring a side dish or salad for 6. If your last name starts with N-Z bring a desert for 6.
Cost: $10 for individual members or $15 for members with their family or friends. $5 for individual retired members, first time chemists, K-12 teachers, students and unemployed members or $10 for the same with family or friends.

Come explore the wild side with Cincinnati ACS at party night at the Zoo!
We have scheduled the Cincinnati Zoo CREW plaza for party night on Friday May 15 from 5:30 – 9:30 pm. This is an after-hours, private event.
Tours of the CREW facilities will be available for us to learn more about their research efforts in saving species with science. A CREW scientist will guide groups of 15-20 on a 20-minute tour throughout most of the evening, with tours starting at 5:30 pm.
The Zoo’s indoor exhibits will be open for your viewing as well as any outdoor exhibits that have animals out at night.
The lodge will be our backup-up facility in case of rain.
Dinner will be at 6:30pm on the plaza. Dinner is an Italian Buffet: Classic tossed salad, with ranch and balsamic vinaigrette dressings, bow-tie or rotini pasta with 3 sauces – marinara, pesto, or spinach-onion cream. Sauteed peppers and mushrooms, steamed broccoli and baby carrots. Coffee, tea, and cash bar.

From Downtown Cincinnati: Go east on U.S. Highway 50 (Columbia Parkway) and take Exit 1J, I-471 South towards Newport, KY. Go South on I-471 to the traffic light at the intersection of I-471 and U.S. Highway 27. Continue straight and turn right at the next traffic light onto Nunn Drive.
East on I-275 (Only use these directions if coming from the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport): Take Exit 76, “Three Mile Road/Norther Kentucky University.” Turn right. the first traffic light is Kenton Drive; the second traffic light is Nunn Drive.
East or West on I-275: Take exit 74A, towards Alexandria, leading to I-471 South. Go to the traffic light at the intersection of I-471 and U.S. Highway 27. Continue straight and turn right at the next traffic light onto Nunn Drive.
Parking: As of 2009 guests have to park in one of the two garages (Kenton and University Drive parking garages) and NOT in the surface lots. The Kenton Drive parking garage is the closest to the new Student Union, where the meeting will take place. The parking fee of $2.00 can be waived if you bring your ticket for validation to the registration desk. Due to construction on campus, traffic in and out of campus can be heavy at times and it is recommended that you plan extra time for parking.

About the Instructor
Ian Morrison is a Fellow at Cabot Corporation. Previously, he was the Director of Ink Technology at E Ink Corporation, and a Principal Scientist at Xerox Corporation. He has over 20 years experience in teaching short courses.

- Surfactant Science and Technology – Adsorption at interfaces; common anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants; solution properties of surfactants; source and selection of surfactants.
- Spreading, wetting and adhesion – Basic principles of the nature and stability of interfaces; molecular models of interactions across interfaces; contact angles; Laplace pressures; Marangoni effects.
- Laboratory Techniques – Particle size and charge measurements; acoustic techniques; adsorption from solution; rheology.
- Suspension and Emulsion Stability – Dispersion-force attraction; steric stabilization; electrostatic repulsion; role of ionic strength and zeta potential; stability in nonaqueous media; electrosteric stabilization.
- Foam Technology – Bubble formation and stability; physical properties of foams; mechanisms and antifoaming.
- Emulsion Technology – Emulsifiers; HLB and PIT scales; physical properties of emulsions; phase inversion; comminution and attrition; commercial processing equipment.

Check-in at 7:30 a.m. on the first day of the course and the course runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.

The course fee will be $650 for ACS members and $750 for non-members (compare to $1,395 at a National ACS meeting). The fee includes course materials, continental breakfast, lunch, and refreshment break. Seating will be limited.

About the Speaker:
Sara Risch is a professor at Michigan State University . She was Director of the School of Packaging from 2004 to 2006. Prior to joining Michigan State , Sara had her own consulting business where she worked with food, flavor and packaging companies on product-package compatibility as well as new product development. She also spent five years as Director of R&D for Golden Valley Microwave Foods (now part of ConAgra Snack Foods). She is active in the American Chemical Society and is currently a Councilor for the Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division and vice-chair of the Committee on Nominations and Elections. She is a professional member of the Institute of Food Technologists , serving on the Committee on Divisions and on the executive committees for both the Food Packaging and Food Chemistry Divisions. Sara received her B.S and Ph.D. in Food Science from the University of Minnesota . She received a MS in Food Science from the University of Georgia .
