Alton J. Mabis

Dr. Alton Mabis was born October 6, 1920 in Allen County, Indiana. He was raised in Paulding County, Ohio. In 1938 he graduated as Valedictorian from Payne High School in Payne, Ohio. He received his B. S. degree cum laude from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio in 1942. In 1957 he received a Ph. D. in physical chemistry from Ohio State University. His dissertation was entitled "The Crystal Structure of Tetranitromethane."

Prom 1944 to 1945, Dr. Mabis worked on the Manhattan Project at Columbia University. From 1947 until his retirement in 1980 he worked for Procter & Gamble at the Miami Valley Laboratories. He began his career as a Research Chemist and concluded his career as a Section Head. His research interests involved x-ray crystallography, x-ray spectroscopy, structure and properties of liquid crystals, structure of triglycerides, x-ray analytical methods, optical and electron microscopy. He worked as the manager of x-ray crystallography, microscopy and ESCA groups. He also spent eight years as Manager of Ph. D. Recruiting.

Dr. Mabis has been a member of ACS since 1945. He served as Section Editor for Chemical Abstracts, Crystallography Section in 1955 and 1965. He was a member of the Editorial Board of Advances in Liquid Crystals from 1975 to 1987. He served as a member of the Board of Regents at Capital University from 1971-1983.
