Heritage science represents the use of scientific tools to study cultural heritage. This field has a large overlap with analytical chemistry as studies often involve material characterization. This overlap is both in the tools utilized and in the scientific research questions moving the field forward. An important question in heritage science is how to develop tools that can perform analysis non-invasively. To this end, Raman spectroscopy is increasingly being used for studies of artwork. Raman offers a mean to obtain vibrational information (molecular and structural) about materials under analysis using a non-invasive optical excitation. Raman is particularly important for cultural heritage in the study of organic pigments that cannot be detected with other available techniques. In recent years, the adoption of spatially offset Raman scattering (SORS) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) have further push forward this field by offering tools to obtain sub-surface Raman information and trace analysis. This talk will focus on advances in the use of Raman spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for heritage science.
